On Wednesday this week the Uganda Electoral Commission (EC) registered a significant milestone in its preparations for the 2026 general elections with the groundbreaking ceremony for its new national headquarters and storage facilities are to be erected.

The 10-acre site in Lubowa-Lweza, Wakiso District, is expected to accommodate a 150 bn building comprising a warehouse, office block, and hotel whose construction is expected to be complete wit in 24 months was unveiled by the Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja.

The construction of the headquarters is being undertaken by the National Housing and Construction Company who happens to be the landlord, is tasked to execute the work with in the specified time.

Nabbanja, who was the Guest of Honor, commissioned the groundbreaking and expressed gratitude to the Electoral Commission for their great work and promised continuous support from the President, emphasizing the government’s commitment to democratic promotion and upholding.

Hon. Norbert Mao, Minister of Constitutional Affairs, who is EC’s line minister praised the commission for tirelessly fighting to reduce public resources through rent.

Justice Simon Byabakama, EC Chairperson highlighted the strategic importance of the new headquarters, emphasizing its role in supporting critical functions such as information and communication technology upgrades and enhanced infrastructure.

The event attracted politicians from different political Parties including Democratic Party (DP), Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) among others.

With its enhanced infrastructure and security, the Commission will be better equipped to deliver its mandate, ensuring a smooth and successful electoral process.

While speaking to Digitalk tv , Justice Mugenyi Byabakama Simon promised to organize free and fair elections and urged Ugandans to maintain peace during elections, adding that, the Headquarters are to play a crucial role in facilitating the 2026 elections since, it is where the nominations, tallying all the 2026 election information are expected to be generating from starting form September 1, 2025.
