The nominations took place this morning at the party headquarters in Bukoto. The Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) electoral commission Chairman, Dan Mugarura has today morning at the Bukoto party head offices confirmed Rtd. Gen, Mugisha Muntu as the duly nominated party presidential flag bearer candidate for the 2026 upcoming general elections.

Muntu was seconded by the party acting national coordinator Hon. Alice Alaso.

While receiving his expression of interest papers, Mugarura said that, Muntu’s nomination came after fulfilling all the necessary criteria necessary by providing the required documents and emphasized the exercise continuity up to 27th this month.

A happy and smiling Muntu in a press conference re-echoed his vision for the country, particularly, the need for institutional strengthening and independence, if Uganda is to develop.

He further showed the need for opposition political parties to collaborate in the forthcoming elections if they are to overwhelm the incumbent leadership.

However, he expressed dismay over the just concluded NRM primaries which he said were marred by irregularities and highlighted what he said was “greed” for power which was represented by the violence that transpired in different parts of the country, specifically Sembabule.

The commission further, nominated other aspirants on different levels mainly Member of Parliament and among who were, Safiina Sebagala, aspiring for Makindye West, Barigye Innocent, Western Youth MP, Fatuma Bangi, Busiro East.

The EC Chairperson also, informed the media that, the party had nominated close to ten candidates on an MP level at the headquarters, and many others were nominated from their respective districts.

Muntu was in company of several party leaders, including the Party national coordinator, Hon. Alice Alaso, the head of the party’s communication team, Sylvin Gumisiriza, the national coordinator for youth, Agaba Nelson among other.

In attendance were members of the party, including students from Makerere University, who described the activity as historic in the democratic development of Uganda and vowed to traverse the country with the Gen. Muntu mobilized support for his election.

Gen. Muntu, a bush war veteran and former army commander, will officially be confirmed as the presidential flag bearer of the Alliance for National Transformation during the party’s national conference scheduled to take place on Monday, July 28, 2025.

If confirmed, Muntu is anticipated to become a joint candidate for ANT and People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) as a coalition candidate against NRM’S H.E. Yoweri Museveni (incumbent) and Hon Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu of NUP who have already expressed interest to run for the country’s top seat.
