Drama, chaos and bitter verbal exchange between security and Kiiza Eron supporters and lawyers ensued at High Court, Criminal Division ahead of the passport application hearing on Wednesday morning.
By 08:30am, several supporters donned in black T-shirts with the “Return Eron’s Passport” had begun accessing court room 2, where judge David Matovu was expected to hear the matter from, before informing them through court security, that the matter was to be heard from his chambers.
However, due to the increasing numbers of Eron lawyers and supporters, some who were just coming in with the same T-shirts were denied court entry, something that cause the exchange between security, some lawyers, friends and the applicant.
As if that wasn’t sour enough, court room security denied access to friends, media and some relatives who were already in, from accessing the chambers, an act that again caused havoc and shouting around court.
In the process of the security check to access the chambers, it is alleged that, Judge Matovu didn’t wait and want for the numbers to increase, and allowed the application, that not even lawyers were able to introduce themselves to judge, though Counsel Wanda Samuel was able to stay behind to received the ruling and subsequently the passport.
Among the lawyers representing Eron Kiiza include; Wanda Ronald Samuel, Ssekanjako Abubaker, Arinaitwe Peter, Paul Waswa, Tumusiime kato, Tumusiime Kakuru, George Musisi, Carol Achak, Mwebesa Andrew, Raphael Tenderi, Kwetonda Henry among others.
Earlier on, State through Kyomuhendo Joseph, the Chief State Attorney had sworn an affidavit blocking Eron’s application on claims Eron’s possibilities of no return if allowed his passport, the claim quashed by the judge.
Upon receiving the good news, court was filled with revolutionary songs and jubilation.
It should be recalled that, Eron was arrested, charged and sentenced to Kitalya Prison for eight Months on January 07, 2025 over an illegal crime of contempt of court by a military tribunal pausing as court, according to the supreme court ruling of January 31, 2025 in a matter of Attorney General Vs Hon. Micheal.
It was after this ruling, that Counsel Eron Kiiza sought legal redress in High Court, where he was at first tossed by both Criminal and Civil Divisions before being granted bail, and deposit his passport as one of the bail terms.
