The Uganda Independent Electoral Commission (EC) through her Chairperson Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama has on Friday morning announced changes in the nomination dates for the local Council, municipality and City position.
Addressing the media at her headquarters in Kampala, Byabakama revealed that those with desires to contest for Member of Parliament, District councilor and city Mayor positions will have to access and download the election guidelines and nomination forms on the EC’s website.
EC said that, Monday, 11th August 2025 to Wednesday, 24th September 2025 those aspirating to contest for president will have to collect nomination forms and guidelines for the 2026 Presidential Elections.
Byabakama said, unlike local lower positions including parliamentary, presidential aspirants should use this period to collect nomination forms, Supporter forms (signatures of not less than one hundred (100) registered voters from at least two-thirds (2/3) of all districts in Uganda) and guidelines for nomination and related activities, and all are collected in person at the current Kampala, EC, offices.
In EC’s new changes, nominations for the District/City Chairpersons, Lord Mayor and Councilors, will be conducted from 3rd September 2025 to 5th September, 2025 at the office of the respective District/City Returning Offices.
Nominations for the Municipality/City Division Chairpersons and Councilors, will be conducted from 8th September, 2025 to 10th September, 2025 at the office of the respective District/City Returning Offices.
For the case of Sub-County/Town/Municipal Divisions Chairpersons and Councilors, nominations will be conducted from 11th September 2025 to 24th September, 2025, excluding the weekend, at the respective County Headquarters.
Unlike other positions, the nomination forms and guidelines for District Councilors, Municipal Councilors and Sub- County Councilors’ elections will be collected from the respective District/City Electoral Commission Offices, from 11th August 2025, whereas, the nomination forms for District Chairpersons elections will be accessed for downloading from the EC from 11th August 2025.
Commenting on the recent violence exhibited the NRM primaries, Justice Byabaka has appealed to Ugandans, to desist from violence since, it might result into political instabilities and bloodshed.
He further assured Ugandans, that by use of the bio-metric machines, they’re read to conduct a free and fair election exercise with minimal malpractices to avoid violence and doubt.
He belittled NRM for allowing kids as young as Primary Five to participate in the elections and warned that, this won’t happen in the general election.
When asked on the functionality of these machines especially in rural areas of likely figure print recognition failure, Justice Byabakama assured nationals, that this has been cured.
