Some Ugandans are still at crossroads over the Forum for Democratic Change’s (FDC) Delegates’ Conference cancellation after Eng. Hon. Patrict Oboi Amuriat (POA) stepping down Hon. James Nathan Nandala Mafabi as the flag bearer.

FDC becomes the 4th political party to declare and announce their presidential flag bearers, after the National Resistance Movement (NRM) declaring president Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni as the party sole candidate, National Unity Platform (NUP) unveiled Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu and Gen. Mugisha Gregory Muntu for the Alliance National Transfprmation (ANT).

Wednesday, last week, FDC party elders declared Mafabi the flag bearer after reciving a communication from Amuriat, notifying his withdrawal, a decision that led to the cancellation of the DC which was to elect who would hold the party flag.

According to an official statement from FDC, the decision was made to foster unity, strategic alignment ahead of the 2026 general elections, block any possible fractures like before and promote party cohesion to avoid dispute.

Nandala Mafabi, a seasoned political figure and influential force within the FDC, now stands unchallenged as the party’s flag-bearer. His nomination marks a new phase for the opposition party, which has recently faced internal divisions and defections.

Party members and supporters have however, expressed mixed reactions, where some hailed Amuriat’s decision as a noble sacrifice for the greater good, while others questioned the openness and fairness of the transition process.

FDC leadership, though, maintains that all constitutional guidelines were followed and reiterated their commitment to building a united and strong campaign team ahead of the 2026 polls.

Uganda now awaits to see, the party’s performance beyond that of 2021 after a huge rupture when some prominent members quit to form People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) whereas some joined other parties.
