Kibuli Hill, Kampala – August 1, 2025
As Uganda enters another tense electoral period, the Kabaka of Buganda, His Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, urged his subjects to remain cautious and not to fall for empty promises from self-seeking politicians.
In a pre-recorded video aired during the 32nd coronation anniversary held at Kibuli Hill on Thursday afternoon, the Kabaka expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of his people before warning them political deception from seeking individuals.
Though absent from the event due to health concerns, the Kabaka reaffirmed his appreciation to the people of Buganda and all Ugandans who have stood by the kingdom. He also encouraged his subjects to protect the monarchy from forces that aim to undermine it.
“Be careful not to be misled by those who take advantage of elections to trick you with mere tokens,” the Kabaka cautioned.
At the same event, the Katikkiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, assured the public that the Kabaka is on a steady path to recovery and expressed confidence in his eventual return to active royal duties.
Prince Kassim Nakibinge, the ceremonial leader of Uganda’s Muslim community and host of the ceremony, reinforced the Kabaka’s message by calling for increased civic responsibility.
“If you don’t participate in choosing your leaders, you open the door for unqualified people to take charge,” Prince Nakibinge said. “Scrutinize every candidate and don’t let anyone take advantage of your vote.”
He also condemned recent outbreaks of political violence, citing incidents in areas like Kawempe North and during the NRM primaries. Nakibinge called for a complete overhaul of law enforcement strategies to ensure peaceful and credible elections.
“Let the true winners take office without chaos or conflict,” he added, urging tolerance and justice throughout the electoral process.
The occasion attracted several high-profile guests, including the Nnabagereka (Queen) Sylvia Nagginda, members of the royal family, religious leaders, government officials, and hundreds of loyal subjects from across Uganda.
On 31st July 1993 His Majesty officially took over the throne after his Coronation at Naggalabi, Buddo and he was crowned as the 36th Kabaka of the Kingdom of Buganda before a mammoth of his subjects. .
His coronation was a result of the 1966 Buganda Crisis which saw abolition of all cultural institutions and Kingdoms by the Obote 1 rule.
Ssaabasajja Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II became the first king in the world to be reinstated after abolition.
