 In a bid to secure and amplify voices against the “illegal” arrest and extradition of Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obed Kamulegeya, Uganda’s opposition figures have Monday morning demanded for unconditional release the duo alongside other political prisoners rooting in several prisons and detention centers or transfer them to civilain courts with jurisdiction to handle political related cases.

In a joint statement signed by leaders including; Robert Kyagulanyi, National Unity Platform (NUP) president, Gen. Mugisha Muntu, Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) Leader, Hajji Hon. Erias Lukwago, PFF acting President but also one of the duo’s lawyers, Saddam Gayira, PPP president, Hon. Winnie Kiiza, Former Leader of opposition, former Leader of Opposition P Wafula Oguttu, Conservative Party president Ken lukyamuzi, Joel Ssenyonyi (NUP) and Nyanjura Doreen of PFF, these leaders expressed dismay over continued human violations and political persecution against opposing views.

The same statement, the leaders condemned the abduction of Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale from Kenya on 16th November 2024 which they say was in complete violation of domestic, regional and international laws.

They have gone further to challenge, Besigye and Hajji Obeid Kamulegeya Makindye Court Martial charges related to treachery after the allegedly claims of possession of firearms.

In a five demand statements, they have also called for a stop on the civilians’ trial in court martial of politically driven cases, and the same be either terminated or transferred to civilian courts.

They have further called upon the Chief Justice, Alfonso Owinyi Dollo and the supreme court, to rise up and end this mess before it is too late for the country to handle.

“We the undersigned leaders of political parties and formations do hereby demand that the charges against Dr Besigye and Hajji Obeid Kamulegeya are dropped and if not, that they are transferred to the civilian courts bearing the jurisdiction to try the alleged offenses” the statement reads.

“All cases involving the numerous political prisoners and other civilians must be terminated and transferred to civilian courts” Opposition leaders added.

These furious leaders of opposition from different political parties who convened in the office of LOP Joel Ssenyonyi in Parliament Monday morning said that, court martial is being used to satisfy individual interests of the regime.
